"With Y'all I'm Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Ballad Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 motion picture show Fast Break. It was performed by Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited as Syreeta) and became an international striking for the duo, reaching number iv on the Billboard Hot 100[ii] and number two on the UK singles chart.[3]

The music from Fast Pause was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to four of the songs on the soundtrack anthology. Connors recalls, "I had written most of the lyrics to 'With You I'1000 Built-in Again' in 22 minutes, simply I couldn't discover two words and it was driving me crazy."[4] The correct words came to her on her fashion to an ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper forth with her society. "I had finally found information technology—the line I was seeking--'Come show me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll notice this'—and I wanted to get it down on paper."[iv]
Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston'due south partner for the ii duets that had been written for the motion-picture show,[5] and each singer also had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack anthology also. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally non very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to do their own thing, only this worked out extremely well for both of them."[four] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You I'm Born Once more". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it being a hit single."[vi]
Connors noted the impression some were left with by the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the vocal on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he's a star.'" Connors also shared, "The late great Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he outset heard the vocal on the radio and stood straight up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cut by the scissors. But radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Break soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco however permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the anthology, the dance melody "Become for It", was chosen every bit the single that would exist issued to promote the anthology. That selection barely made a dent in the charts, spending one week on the Disco singles chart at number lxxx in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling nether" the Billboard Hot 100 for one week at number 108.[2]
The moving-picture show did not become much attention, either, and Preston described their adjacent endeavor to give "With You I'yard Born Over again" more than exposure, explaining that "after the film didn't practice very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled it off that album and put it on mine."[six] Preston's anthology, Late at Dark, came out later in 1979, but even with that reissue of the vocal, Preston insisted that "we even so didn't call up of it as a unmarried."[vi] It did, however, begin to get airplay in the European market[6] and was finally released as a single at the cease of the year.
Another hurdle the vocal had to overcome was the fact that its title did non click with some record buyers. "Connors says her but regret about 'With You I'm Born Again' is that she didn't title it 'Come up Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to let me know we had a monster hitting on our easily but that early on many people were going into tape stores asking for "Come Bring Me Your Softness", and some tape sales were lost as a event.'"[four] The fact that the phrase "born again" is often associated with Christianity may take as well been disruptive, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, simply Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that'due south the way we felt about i another. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Break, we understood it was a romantic song. "With You I'm Born Once more" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated Dec 8, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[2] The following week marked its first advent on the UK singles nautical chart[8] and on Billboard's list of the 50 most popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number two showing.[9] [3] It also started 3 weeks on the magazine's Hot Soul Singles chart in the January 19, 1980, effect and got as high every bit number 86.[10] It was Preston's biggest hit in five years and the biggest pop hitting of Wright's career.
